HEST - HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT SAFETY TRAINING

Program overview

The HEST (also known in the media industry as: News and Crisis) course comprises Hostile Environment Safety Training with an underpinning protective driving component. This is the capstone course in the journalist-training program that includes News and Crisis and News and Risk. Underpinning knowledge and skills gained from these courses compliment a tiered training program that prepares the individual and team for work in Australia and overseas.

The trainers for this course come from a specialist military and policing background. They have worked very closely with corporate industries including media, finance, logisitics and mining to develop a course that’s relevant to the way you do your jobs. Course development is ongoing and in itself lends a value of currency and credibility to the program, industry feedback is very important - for this reason we encourage you to participate in the knowledge centre.

More than just a course. This program provides life saving skills and knowledge, spouses are encouraged to attend.

 

Program includes topics:

 

• Winning attitude and surviving stress
• Situational awareness and personal safety
• Improvised explosive device, mines and ordnance awareness and search
• Operational survival, self sufficiency and use of satellite communications
• Pros and cons of PPE, fitting and use of ballistic armour
• Weapons and ballistic awareness
• Medical; including Remoate Area First Aid and crisis medical response
• Risk assessment (AS/NZS 4360:2004) and contingency planning
• Use of vehicles in hostile environments and tactical driving
• Skills practices:

  • Extraction under stress
  • Quick decision exercises using role-play and simulation techniques
  • Anti surveillance and reaction to attack assessment
  • Navigation and extraction planning

Course conduct

 

All courses are professionally facilitated including practical application of skills in an engaging forum. All participants receive an aide memoire to complement the learning of the program and to retain as a reference source.

The News and Crisis course comprises Hostile Environment Safety Training with an underpinning protective driving component.

Two venues are utilised for this training. An Outdoor Training venue located ½ hour south of this site is utilised for practical demonstration and simulation.


Transport is available by rail to the Cronulla Train Station or all day parking is available on The Kingsway, Gunnamatta Bay and surrounding streets, otherwise there are council approved parking areas with 1-4 hr limits.


Dress is neat casual, however we do recommend rugged clothing, please remember warm/wet weather clothing.


Personal belongings may be secured on-site.

Administration
All participants are to arrive on time and have in their possession their current Driver’s Licence.


Participants are to be aware of their medical conditions and to bring with them any medications they require. Pre-existing conditions are to be brought to the attention of the instructors prior to commencing activities.

It should be noted that active participation is required. While the course is intensive the training methodology however builds on group discussion and practical learning.

FUNDING FOR MEDIA FREELANCERS

Rory Peck Trust

Beltin Group is now an approved course provider of the Rory Peck Trust.

The Rory Peck Trust is a charitable organisation set up to offer assistance to freelance media personnel and their families internationally.

This fund exists for the sole purpose of providing bursaries to enable freelance media workers worldwide to take safety training courses.  The Fund is international and open to freelancers worldwide.

Application criteria:

  • Bursaries are limited and available only to applicants who have been working as a bona fide professional freelancer for a minimum of 18 months.  

 

Priority is given to:

  • Those whose work habitually takes them into hostile environments.
  • Those with confirmed assignments in hostile regions.
  • Those with an immediate or urgent need.
